Boa Noite, Manaus! - Random Notes from the Amazon
Or Good Evening Manaus!!!
I have limited internet so this will be unorganized. Apologies.
I am here!! It's been an overwhelming four days. My portuguese is doing well. When people speak slowly I can almost completely understand them. Of course when I get tired, that really diminishes.
My pastor from LA who is Brazilian, came to preach at the church in Manaus this weekend so he introduced me to the congregation at all three services. Apparently he told them (in portuguese) that I like Acai and a fruit called tucuma - both true. And that they should make sure and speak portuguese to me so that I learn. Today I was walking past the church with my roommate back from shopping and someone called out my name and asked if my portuguese was better today. Brazilians are funny.
My apartment and set up are different than what I would expect in the states. I understand that the family who owns the house my apartment is in didn't realize I would be living there until a few days before I arrived. So I'm having to make do and find and furnish. But I did say I wanted to live more simply. So I definitely got that.
It's very hot and humid here (go figure, its the jungle) but my hair loves it. I was raised in humidity and the follicles are happy to be back in it.
I don't yet have specifics on what my days will look like, what work here will look like. The Brazilians tend to be a bit vague on things we Americans like specifics. So it may take a few days of patience. But I'm excited to be here. It's a challenge, learning any new city is, but I'm happy for this one.
Will get photos uploaded soon!!!
